Prevention of wound infection

Open wounds – especially large or deep ones – are a gateway for various types of germs like bacteria or funghi that can enter the wound and cause dangerous complications such as impeding the healing process.

Observing hygiene

For the prevention of wound infection, it is important to work in a sterile environment: clean the area around the wound, use sterile dressings and finally shield the wound from the penetration of germs at a later stage.

This is achieved with special dressings that form waterproof barriers (but are also breathable) and ideally even allow visual inspection of the wound. Leukoplast even offers plasters with a bacteria-binding wound pad that can thus remove germs from the wound during dressing changes.

An infected wound and its symptoms

Infection can be signified by

• conspicuous redness

• excessive heat

• swelling

• high sensitivity to pain

Care for infected wounds is a case for the medical experts. They can tell whether antibiotics or tetanus protection are needed. They will also remove dead tissue from the wound if it is preventing the healing process. There are also special wound dressings for infected wounds made of foam and hydrogel which help to moisten and ventilate the wound while absorbing excess secretions.
